Designing Student Onboarding & HCD Training

2017 - Spring 2018

Challenge

Retention and completion rates at Mt. Hood Community College are dropping along with the national average of 47% completion. New student onboarding was identified as a barrier to student persistence and success. The challenge is to integrate the disparate and siloed student service functions across campus into one consistent, student-centered experience both in person and online.

My role, along with my partner, is to lead and educate the MHCC project team to apply human-centered design to this complex challenge to hit federal grant grant requirements and expected outcomes. I shaped the engagement to leverage homework for the project team along with consultant-led workshops at key milestones in the Design Thinking process; Discovery, Synthesis, Concept, Prototype, and Pilot Implementation.

My Role & Approach

- 100+ student interviews and 75+ stakeholder interviews
- Monthly coaching call to support Human-Centered Design application
- 6 workshops with 20-30 stakeholders
- Service Design Blueprints
